John Fred Johnson, MD

Dr. Johnson is a board-certified, fellowship-trained South Carolina native who has practiced medicine in the Charleston area for over 30 years. After graduating from the College of Charleston with honors, he attended the Medical University of South Carolina for three years and one year at The London University Hospital in London, England. Following medical school, Dr. Johnson had the unique opportunity to work in research with a spine surgeon and brother Dr. Donald Johnson in San Francisco and Hong Kong. This experience fostered a special interest in spinal medicine, leading to a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at MUSC. Dr. Johnson published several articles in that period and was appointed Chief Resident in his final year. Subsequently, he completed a subspecialty fellowship in adult conservative spinal medicine with the Carolina Spine Institute. During the first few years of private practice, he was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Neurology at MUSC. Dr. Johnson is one of the founding members of the Southeastern Spine Institute and has performed over 25,000 spinal procedures. Dr. Johnson was the past president of the South Carolina Spine Society. He is pleased and proud to be back at the Medical University of South Carolina, where his practice focuses on treating, diagnosing, and preventing spinal pathology. When not at work, Dr. Johnson enjoys reading, music, hiking, motorcycling, and spending time with family and friends.
